Prayer

Prayer is foundation to all religions allowing the believer to communicate directly with God. Yet, most of us are not very good at praying. Yes, we know the Lord’s Prayer, perhaps a bedtime prayer that may begin “Now, I lay me down to sleep…” or a family prayer said at meal time. But if asked to pray for another person or in a group, we may not know what to say. Even, Jesus’ disciples had to be taught to pray when they asked “Lord, teach us to pray”. Below are two examples that may be helpful as you pray.

FIVE FINGER PRAYER

Here is an easy way to pray which you can use when you say your evening prayers or if you are asked to pray in a group.

Thumb—pray for those closest to you: family, friends, team or classmates
Index finger—this finger points the way; leaders, teachers, your soccer coach, Scout or 4H leader
Middle finger—the tallest finger for those who have positions of authority; president, the world
Ring finger—the weakest finger reminding us to pray for those who are sick; who live in poverty
Little finger—don’t forget to pray for yourself; then take time to listen for God to speak back to you
